Curtains vs Blinds: Which Should You Choose?

If you’ve ever stood at a window wondering whether curtains or blinds are the right call, you're in good company.

It’s one of those decisions that feels straightforward until you start thinking about light, privacy, style, and how the room actually needs to function day-to-day.

The honest answer is that it depends – but that doesn't mean there's no guidance to be had.

Here's how to think through it.

What's the Difference?

Curtains feel softer and more decorative. Blinds are cleaner and more functional. Both have a strong case, depending on the room.

The Case for Curtains

Curtains are the natural choice when you want a room to feel warm and finished. They add colour, texture, and a sense of comfort that blinds rarely match – particularly in bedrooms and living rooms, where full-length fabric just works.

Thicker curtains also do a decent job of insulating against draughts, which is worth keeping in mind as energy costs stay high. And because fabric comes in so many weights, patterns, and finishes, it’s one of the easier ways to give a room a genuine sense of character.

The trade-off is practicality. Curtains need space to stack back, and they’re generally all-or-nothing when it comes to light.

The Case for Blinds

Blinds earn their place through precision. Whether it's blocking the sun from hitting your TV at the wrong angle or letting light into a bathroom without losing privacy, they give you a level of control that curtains simply can't.

They're also much easier to clean, making them the smarter choice for kitchens and bathrooms. And in smaller rooms, they sit neatly within the frame without eating into floor space.

Roller, Roman, Venetian, vertical – there's enough variety in the blind world to suit most aesthetics, including ones you might not expect.

Style Considerations

Curtains tend to suit traditional, layered, or more luxurious interiors – think linens, velvets, and rooms that are meant to feel inviting rather than minimal.

Blinds lean towards contemporary spaces where clean lines do the work. That said, a Roman blind in the right fabric can feel just as soft as curtains, and sheer curtains can read as very modern. The category matters less than the execution.

Practical Considerations

Privacy, light control, maintenance, and space all play a role here. Blinds offer more flexibility on the first two – especially in rooms that are overlooked. Curtains are harder to clean but bring more warmth; blinds wipe down easily but don't do much for draughts.

In busy, practical spaces like kitchens, blinds usually win. In rooms where you spend time relaxing, curtains tend to feel more considered.

Why Not Both?

This is the option people most often overlook, and often the one that works best.

Layering a roller or Roman blind with curtains gives you daytime light control and privacy from the blind, with the softness and warmth of fabric around the window. It also adds depth to a room in a way that either option alone rarely achieves – it looks designed rather than just functional.

It does take a bit more thought to get the proportions right, but it's well worth considering before you commit to one or the other.

What Tends to Work Best, Room by Room

Living rooms often suit curtains or a combination of both – comfort and style carry more weight here than in most other spaces. Bedrooms are similar, though blackout blinds paired with curtains are a practical favourite for good reason.

Kitchens and bathrooms are generally better served by blinds. Moisture, splashes, and the need for easy cleaning make fabric a less appealing option, and the streamlined look tends to suit these rooms anyway.

If softness and warmth are the priority, curtains are hard to beat. If you need control, practicality, and a clean finish, blinds are the more sensible choice. And if you want a room that genuinely works as well as it looks, combining the two is usually the most satisfying answer.
